There is no machine so intricate, so finely constructed as the human body. Ten trillion cells filled with robust energy are integrated into this living, self-maintaining and reproducing miracle of unrivaled complexity. But from where did the beginnings of this amazingly marvelous mechanism arise?

From dust, from the minute particles of living earth, the aggregate of all existing things do we come, "till thou return unto the ground, for out of it wast though taken; for dust though art, and unto dust shalt thou return." (Genesis 3:19 KJV).

Whether living or abiotic (nonliving), the whole of Creation is constructed of the same chemical elements as the particles of the biosphere: nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and  magnesium, chloride and sodium, and other elements such as iron, maganese, zink and copper...elements needed by people and all living organisms to sustain life.

Since Creation people have lived in synergistic oneness with earth, taking in its energy and releasing it back as metabolic waste and disintegrated remains after death...an interrelated exchange of elements...an inseparable unity of oneness.

From within earth's microscopic jungle, soil fungi and bacteria recycle the chemical elements that move from the abiotic environment, through living organisms via the food chain, and then back to the nonliving environment.

When equipped with this continuous supply of recycled matter from within the microscopic jungle of top soil, photosynthetic plants use the sun's one-way flow of energy to make proteins, carbohydrates, and lipid fats. People obtain these organic foods by consuming the plants and the animals that eat the plants.

These precious nutrients...proteins, carbohydrates, and fats not only supply the body with vitamins and essential elements such as carbon phosphorous, nitrogen, oxygen,  and sulfur, but numerous other elements needed for human metabolism; for muscle movement and nerve conduction, for bones and teeth...for the very essence of life with its complex and amazing chemical processes.

I hope you enjoyed reading this excerpt from the foreword of my book Life is a Chemical Process: Beyond Nutrition. But more important is that you understood that your body is a living laboratory, more complex and more astonishing than any man-made laboratory, and that it needs the right amount and right combination of nutrients to generate efficiently.

Sadly, though, you also need to understand that earth's natural microscopic jungle is almost exhausted from overwork, and that synthetic chemical destruction, thus your foods do not contain the right amount and combination of nutrients needed for a disease-free body.

Also understand that everyone is unique. We are all individuals and our bodies differ. What might be a right combination and amount of nutrients to heal or keep one person healthy might not be enough for another person. Some people have to saturate their bodies with extra nutrients to stay healthy or recover from disease. It depends on the body's unique chemistry and certain inborn errors of metabolism. This is why it is important to gain the knowledge you need for you and your loved ones to function on the high end of the health-disease continuum. And you can achieve optimum health, along with a feeling of well-being that you never knew was possible. Dr. Rosemary Brackett R.N., B.S.N., C.H.P., Ph.D.
